Opportunities to Serve
Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. In fulfillment of his own purpose he gave us birth by the word of truth, so that we would become a kind of first fruits of his creatures. (James 1: 17-18)
The best way to give to your church is through service. Some needs are always there; some come up occasionally. Some types of service require special skills; others simply require a willing heart and hands. Not everyone can make a long-term commitment, but many needs are short-term. This page will have the most current short-term opportunities.
These simple, cotton masks are NOT medical grade so they are not suitable for physicians or RNs. But they are in demand by other caregivers and workers who come in contact with the public, such as staff at nursing homes.
For those who sew and have supplies at home, Kaitlin Smith forwards these patterns from Patchwork Plus in Dayton, VA.
For those who NEED supplies, Accacia Mullen, who runs Make It Sew across from Lex Pres, has assembled kits that you can purchase for $4 apiece, plus tax. Each kit has supplies for four masks. If you want to purchase kits from Make It Sew, let Pam Luecke know and she will arrange for a pick-up from Accacia. The store is open only by appointment.
A few more tips, for those interested in taking part in this sew-a-thon:
- After you have made a few masks, put them into a sealable bag with the number of masks marked on the outside. This will reduce the number of times they are handled.
- To address the broader need, write to your senators and congressmen and urge them to free up medical-grade facemasks and other personal protection equipment.
In the meantime, as one member puts it, we will be covering faces with love from the hands at Lexington Presbyterian Church.

LexPres is responsible for all the volunteers on the second Monday of every month. This means we will need people to serve from 5:30 to 7:30 and to clean up at 7:30. We need a minimum of six people for each shift. To sign up call Liz Gordon at 464-4901 or send here a note:
Community Table Desserts
We are providing dessert for The Community Table on the 4th Monday of every month. If you are able to prepare a dessert and deliver to The Community Table (RARA building on Spotswood Drive) or to the church, please contact Mary Beth Baker (463-9563) or leave her a note below. Thank you for your continued support of this wonderful ministry.
