A DIARY OF DAILY PRAYER
29 May 2020
Opening Sentences (responsive) .
Have you not known? Have you not heard?
Those who seek for and wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary;
They shall walk and not faint.
Prayer for Illumination
O God, you have made us God-seeking creatures. By the power of your Spirit, awaken that God-given nature we too readily dismiss. Through the words of scripture, make us, mold us, fashion us, change us into who you made us to be…into who you know we can be. Amen.
Scripture Reading Matthew 7:7-8
7 “Ask, and it will be given you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who seeks finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened…”
[In 2013, I wrote the following piece. It came out of pondering the passage from Matthew 7.]
Being ground round
Depth and breadth-seeking
Length of days…not exactly
Merciful and gracious God, when our faith amounts to little more than reciting creeds…when our worship is anything less than an expression of our deepest gratitude…when our love is obligatory… when our focus upon “how things have been done” prevents us from facing the challenges of today as those who have been claimed by a vision of your kingdom…when our faith becomes an heirloom rather than a living fountain…when our faithfulness is compassion-less…when our seeking is for all the wrong things and reasons… forgive us. Awaken in us such faith that can move mountains…such faith that can withstand trouble…such faith that will cause others to gasp in respect for you, O God.[i] Amen.
O God, you call us to ventures of which we cannot see the ending, by pathways as yet untraveled, through perils unknown. Give us faith to go out with courage, not knowing where we are going… only that your hand is leading us and your love supporting us.
Amen and Amen.
[i] This prayer was inspired by and adapted from something Abraham Heschel wrote in his book, God in Search of Man. I came across this citation, however, from: Heschel, Susannah. ed. 2011. Abraham Joshua Heschel: Essential Writings. Maryknoll, NY: Orbis Books, 49.
