Youth Classes

Curriculum

Both the Senior High and Middle School Sunday School Classes will use the curriculum "Claim the Life" by Cokesbury. This comprehensive youth curriculum's lessons revolve around a single key word or phrase from Scripture. These words help teach the language of faith. There is a focus on spiritual formation and fostering Christian community.

For the Senior Highs, some of the key words are Belonging, Blessing, Steadfast Love, New Creation, Peace, Discipline and Thanksgiving. Some of the main themes for the Middle School class are Worship, Praying, Image of God, Commitment, Forgiving, Follow, Kindness and Servant. There are video vignettes for many of the lessons which provide for further discussion.

Sunday School helps us learn more about God; it also provides a safe place to be yourself and reflect on God's movement in your life. Please join your peers and experience this time of Sabbath.

Confirmation Class

This class for eighth grade and above is for those young people preparing to join the church.

Middle School Class

For sixth through eighth graders, this class is taught by Laura & Boyd Brown, Debbie & Frank Friedman, Randy & Tammy Shomo, & Andy Johnson & Cynthia Penne.

High School Class

Our ninth through twelfth graders will be led this year by Theresa & Kirk Luder & Joe Irby.

Summer Mission Trip: June 8-14, 2008

The youth mission trip will be June 8-14, 2008. The group will work through The Pilgrimage program in Washington, D.C. The Pilgrimage sponsors hands-on service learning around issues of urban poverty and homelessness; workshops and reflections on social justice and spiritual practices; and ministries in soup kitchens, food banks, and community gardens. They also collaborate with the National Cathedral in a program called the Inward/Outward Journey which combines inner reflection and prayer practices with outward service ministry. For more information about the program, see www.thepilgrimage.org.

A visit to the Holocaust Museum and an outing to a major league baseball game are also being planned.

If you wish to go, please register soon, as there are only 16 spots for youth. Adults are needed to accompany the youth on the trip. Contact Olivia to sign up as an adult leader, and to register for the mission experience. As of February 18, we have twelve youth signed up to go, which leaves four places available. We also need one more male adult as a leader. The cost is $240 per person.

Once the week's schedule is decided, we can give you more information about additional funds you will need to bring for any special activities we might do in addition to the mission work. Paper work (registration forms and health and emergency forms) necessary for the trip will be on the table outside Olivia's office.

Gifts & Talents Auction

The youth will hold a Gifts and Talents Auction following the Congregational Life dinner on Thursday, April 17 to raise money for their mission trip this summer. We hope you will make an offer on our auction items in support of our youth mission activities. There will be both a silent auction and a live one led by Buddy Bryan, Joe Irby and Frank Friedman.

We will provide child care, if needed. Please let us know by April 10 if you intend to bring children who will need a caregiver.

If you have a gift or talent you can auction or other auctionable items, please fill out one of the forms found in the friendship pads in the pews. You can leave these in the offering plates or turn them in to Olivia by March 31.

Montreat Youth Conference - July 6 - 12, 2008

The Presbytery is organizing a group to attend Youth Conference III at Montreat this summer. The conference will have over 1000 high school students in attendance. We will be staying in a college dorm on the campus of Montreat College. Do think about joining youth from our Presbytery for this week-long experience of fellowship, small group discussions, music and worship. You can find out more about Montreat and the Youth Conferences on their website, www.montreat.org. More information regarding registration and costs will be available soon.

Jenna Smith and Olivia Patton will be accompanying the youth to the conference. The Presbytery also needs two adult men as leaders. Our Planning Committee has budgeted some money to support our youth who wish to attend. Please speak with Olivia if you are interested in participating in the conference.
