Welcome to our rising sixth graders! We look forward to your being a part of youth ministries at the church. You are encouraged to join us this summer for any Youth Group activities that might be planned. Watch for news of upcoming summer events on bulletin boards at the church, through e-mail notices to your homes, through the newsletter and through snail mail! We invite you to join us for worship, study, service and fellowship throughout the year.
A group of youth from Second Pres in Roanoke and other Presbyterian churches in the Roanoke/Salem area are going to a water park near Greensboro in mid-August. The tentative date is August 11. If you would like to go, please contact Olivia, so we can arrange to be a part of this adventure.
Our Youth Sunday School classes will not be held during the summer. We will begin classes again in the early fall. Rally Day will be on September 12.
The 2010 confirmation class is now complete. Click to see pictures of our confirmands.
We invite eighth graders and any older youth who have not been confirmed to attend these classes. Bill Klein will lead the classes - usually a couple of times a month. Adult mentors will also assist as you explore what it means to be a Presbyterian Christian, learn to express your personal faith, and examine your own gifts that may be used toward the mission of the church. More information about confirmation will be available early in the new year.
Thirteen youth participated in our local Youth Mission Week June 7 to 11. Those serving were Catalena Bent, Liam Bent, Bri Bissell, Bryan Emrey, Charlie Haywood, Connor Kroll, Nathaniel Lambert, Savannah Lambert, Katie Lee, Rose Luder, Isabel Richter, Amanda Tuchler, and Emily Tuchler. Adult leaders helped the group with transportation and work at the different service organizations. Many thanks to Margie Page, John Devogt, Bernice O'Brien, Jane Horton, Mary Raine Paxton, Karen Emrey, Laura Brown, and Diana Burgreen!
The group worked for the Campus Kitchen Project, Boxerwood, Habitat for Humanity, Yellow Brick Road, and the Roanoke Rescue Mission. The group began their work on Sunday, June 6 with a meeting to discuss service as Jesus taught us, what expectations we might have, and what our own attitudes about serving are. Each day brought new tasks, insights, learning opportunities, and shared fun and fellowship time. Blessings to all who helped make this amazing week possible!
Katy Brown, Leah Candler, Clay Emrey, Matt Hinks, and Chris Luder participated in the mission trip to Philadelphia, June 13 to 18. They were accompanied by Diana Burgreen and Cal and Lynne McCombs. The trip was organized through a company called YouthWorks, which offers mission opportunities all over the nation. Ask them about their experiences in the City of Brotherly Love!

Called from the chaos, we gather in this sacred space, rooted in God's call and purpose. We seek to provide an authentic community of unconditional love where each individual gives and receives support, trust, and acceptance from others. We will encourage and empower youth to encounter God in, through, and with each other to ask questions, embrace challenges, and be commissioned to apply their faith relevantly in the world.
"For Such a Time As This"
At the Presbyterian Youth Triennium, through the presentations, the studies, recreational events and free time we strive to connect youth and adults with activities that inspire them to be alert, be active and seek ways to connect their lives with their growing faith. We believe that young people are prime carriers of the hope Christians are called to possess. For additional details, visit www.PresbyterianYouthTriennium.org.
These conferences are amazing and we are grateful to be sending delegates to both.
