Tools & Blankets

The Church World Service TOOLS & BLANKETS Program creates a rainbow of caring: providing help and hope each time the right tool is placed in the hands of people in need. Disasters and emergencies of all kinds demand many resources to assist in recovery. Gifts of the TOOLS OF HOPE & BLANKET Program provide needed resources to give families and individuals a little comfort as they are displaced from their homes. Sturdy, warm blankets, tents, ground sheets, plastic tarps offer a shelter in the time of 'storm' whether natural or man-made. And, once the emergency needs are met, the right tool is needed to help people on the road to recovery.

TOOLS OF HOPE can also be ordinary things and things that we often take for granted like ... fishing nets ... clean water ... education ... small-enterprise loans ... garden tools ... seeds and things which can make a world of difference for people devastated by tragedy, as well as those working to build a better life for themselves and their communities.

Helping Hands

Helping HandsThe Helping Hands group meets in the Westfel Lounge from 10:00am-2:00pm on the first Monday of each month, October through April, to sew for the Church World Service and the Medical Benevolence Foundation. Bring a sandwich for lunch. If you can't stay, come pick up items to take home to work on there.

We work on receiving blankets, baby gowns and stuffed animals for hospitalized children for missions abroad as well as in the USA.

If you cannot join us and would like to help, we are always in need of flannel, light weight fabric, bias tape, and light weight yarn. These items may be left on the PW table near the Ladies' Lounge downstairs in Murray Hall.

Call Ellen Smith for more information.

Friends of Barnabas Foundation

Children receiving medicine

This organization works to enable and equip volunteers in Christian mission. Lexington Presbyterian members have participated in medical missions to Honduras sponsored by this organization. Additionally our youth collect flip-flops and lightweight sandals each summer to send to Honduras in August with the Rockbridge medical mission team. If Honduran children wear shoes they can avoid parasite infections and dramatically improve their health and nutritional status.

For more information visit FOBF.org.

Heifer International

Child with goat Families are enabled to sustain themselves by the gift of farm animals. They can then support their entire community by gifts of the animals' offspring. Lexington Presbyterian supports this organization by an annual offering at Christmas.

Rafiki Foundation

Rafiki Village

Rafiki, the Swahili word for friend, captures the vision and purpose of the Rafiki Foundation.

Since 1985 Rafiki has answered God's call to be that friend to the needy in Africa in various ways, including missionary work. In 2001 Rafiki received its first orphan, and has made orphan care and Christian education its top priority. These children, all orphaned because of famine, war, and illness, mainly HIV/AIDS, are being rescued from starvation, disease, hopelessness, and despair. They are given a healthy future filled with laughter, promise, security, learning, and love.

In the villages Rafiki provides all of the housing, supervised by screened African women who act as surrogate mothers. Also provided are food, clothing, supplies, medical care and education for a child from the day he/she arrives until adulthood. The cost to raise a child varies from village to village, therefore there are a number of levels at which you can participate. All funds given go directly to support the child. All of the children need at least one sponsor. You or your family may want to consider this very real way of connecting with a child in Africa.  There are many orphans in the 10 countries in Africa where Rafiki has established villages. The cost is $25, $50, $75, or $100 per month.

The Lexington Presbyterian church school classes, pre-school through high school, are sponsoring a little six-year-old girl named Metsenant Tages. Metsy has recently come to the Rafiki village in Ethiopia. Our classes receive regular updated prayer requests for Metsy, and their weekly offerings go to her support. Deb Klein's class is also supporting Metsy as a back-up for the summer months in which there is no church school.

Additional information and forms are on the bulletin board near the Ladies' Lounge in Murray Hall.

Rockbridge-Haiti Medical Alliance

Medical missions

Beginning in 2008 Rockbridge-Haiti Medical Alliance has shipped over $10,000 worth of medicines, vitamins and supplies to help support the full-time nurse in Fond-Pierre, Haiti. Continued support is greatly appreciated from our church, its members and the community in order to fulfill our mission and vision. It is our hope to provide sustainable healthcare in this impoverished area of Haiti. The RHMA has already raised over $15,000 and will continue its efforts to provide a Health and Wellness program. We hope to build upon the generosity of our supporters and build a lasting partnership in Haiti. I thank those who have given and those who will give in the future to our Foundation.

The Rockbridge-Haiti Medical Alliance will continue its direct medical service for the people of Fond Pierre during a mission trip over Thanksgiving week. A full six-member team will travel November 20-27 and hold clinic for students and parishioners for four days. This year’s team consists of Dr. Walter Kerschl (Lexington Presbyterian), Josh Harvey, Patricia Powell, Craig Campbell (St. Patrick), Dottie Puffer, and Victoria Moore (UVa Medical School). Please pray for the mission team as they depart and serve the people of our twin parish.
