Lexington Presbyterian Music

Instruments

Instrumentalists and singers find regular opportunities to offer their talents for the glory of God, in worship and other activities. These musicians are an integral part of both worship services and take their musical message beyond the sanctuary through concerts and community programs.

We invite all interested persons to take part in one of our choirs.

Children's Choirs

Our choirs for young people use fun music and activities to build fellowship and faith through singing, as we prepare music for worship services and other occasions, such as musical dramas and community outreach. We welcome all of our young people as well as youth from other churches where there are no established choirs.

Rehearsals are full of good fellowship, and a lot of learning - about music and about our faith and how we put it into practice in worship.

Each of the children's choirs participate in worship on a regular basis, and they also participate in field trips and other fun activities. Singing in choir gives our children a wonderful opportunity to grow in the faith - something the congregation promises to support every time a child is baptized. Please remember these promises, and help us to bring even more of our young people into active participation in the worship and fellowship of the church through our choirs. I welcome them at rehearsals (Junior Choir: Thursdays at 3:15 p.m.; Alleluias: Sundays at 9:15 a.m.).

Youth Choirs

We encourage all church youth (grades 6 through 12) with an interest in music to share their talents! The Lam Teen Tintinnabulators (see below), Early Worship music, Youth Sundays and adult choir are just some of the ways in which young musicians can participate. We'll be in touch as opportunities arise, but don't hesitate to let us know of your interests. Don't hide your light under a bushel!

Lam Teen Tintinnabulators

The LAM TEEN TINTINNABULATORS is a handbell ringing choir for youth, grades 8-12 (sometimes younger, depending on a student's musical background) that rehearses Sunday evenings, usually from 5-6 p.m. in room 205 of Murray Hall. We currently have several positions open and are always in need of substitutes. If you read music and are interested in participating in the Lam Teen Tintinnabulators, please contact Ruth Floyd.

2009 rehearsals begin on Sunday, 13 September.

Adult Choirs

Adult Choir

The ADULT CHOIR rehearses on Thursdays from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. We sing at most of the 11:00 worship services  after a warm-up at 10:30, and we present special music programs in the church and beyond. We explore new music while drawing on the rich resources of our choral library. Extensive musical experience is NOT necessary. Contact William McCorkle for more info.

Lam Handbell Choir

The LAM HANDBELL CHOIR consists of 13 adult handbell ringers, and rehearses Sunday evenings from 7:00-8:15 in room 205 of Murray Hall. If you read music and are interested in participating in the Lam Handbell Choir, even as a substitute, please contact Ruth Floyd. We may have a slot open! 2009 rehearsals being on 13 September.

Daytime Handbells

If you are interested in handbell ringing just for fun (no performing!), Marjorie Phillips directs a Friday Morning Handbell Choir. Even if you haven't tried ringing before, now is the time! Let us know of your interest by calling the Church office anytime.

Fisk Organ

The fire that burned our sanctuary in 2000, destroyed our old organ. As part of the reconstruction we commissioned a pipe organ from C.B. Fisk, Inc., of Gloucester, MA. In 2006 the congregation turned out to unload the organ's many parts. Tuning and voicing of the organ was completed in the spring of 2007 and it was formally dedicated to God's service in January, 2008.

The organ accompanies worship services and is used for special recitals and programs.

Music at Noon

This fall Lexington Presbyterian Church will once again offer "Music at Noon," a series of three programs of about a half-hour in length, on Thursdays, September 17 and 24, and October 1. Acknowledging the worldwide observance in 2009 of the bicentennial of the composer Felix Mendelssohn, William McCorkle will perform Mendelssohn's six Sonatas for Organ, Opus 65 (1844-45), offering two sonatas on each of the three noontime programs. Each program will feature another short work (vocal or instrumental) from Mendelssohn's prodigious output. Among the musicians assisting William McCorkle in this program are soprano Christine Fairfield and pianist Joshua Harvey. Plan now to be a part of this musical celebration!
