Communications Committee Report - January 2008

The Communications Committee's purpose is to assure the appropriate flow of communications throughout the church family and the community.

The principal activities during 2007 were in producing - due by early March - a new pictorial directory, and introducing a revised web-site at LexPres.org. The revised web site is one part of the committee's overall plan for 2008 to evaluate and update all the printed materials which the church produces.

On an on-going basis, the committee members carry out the following parts of fulfilling its purpose in the life and work of the church:

Pictorial Directory

The strong positive response from members and friends in the church led to 252 photos taken over seven days (in three months) by Olan Mills That means that well over 550 people will appear in the new directory. The format will be a three-ring binder, enabling photos of new members to be added to the book. Special thanks to JoAnn Wilson and SueNell Dillon for their diligent work on the new directory.

The Church's Website

Mary Ellena Ward, with the assistance of SueNell Dillon, spent considerable effort redesigning the church's web site. The purpose was to make the web design logical and useful in getting information about the church both for members and also for those seeking information about the church.

The Newsletter

Mary Atthowe receives the news items from several people and committees and then produces the newsletter each month. (News items are due by the 15th of each month.) Lila Rogers copies and folds the newsletter, and a team of volunteers collate and prepare it for mailing. Approximately 500 newsletters are produced each month.
The ACS data base programs are used for church membership, and a separate module is used for tracking the church's pledges and contributions. JoAnn Wilson and Courtney Baker, along with Lila Rogers, maintain the ACS People module.

Computers

Joe Wilson ensures that the computers, software, and network operate satisfactorily. He maintains an inventory of all computer equipment and sees to updating the equipment when required.

Bulletin boards and Information racks

General bulletin boards and three information racks are available for fliers and general information about the church. The committee would welcome help on keeping attractive bulletin boards filled with timely information and displays.

Life of the Church message

The Life of the Church message at the beginning of the worship services each week continues to be a very positive way to communicate the spectrum of activities of the church and its work. Many thanks to Hardin Marion, on the Worship Committee, for arranging the people to give the minute.

Volunteers

As an outgrowth of the recommendations of the Life of the Church Task Force, "Volunteers" were added to the duties of the Communications Committee. The ACS data base helps with tracking people and their activities in the church. The Communications Committee did not include a Time and Talent sheet this year during stewardship season. In past years, returns from this sheet have been small. We decided to see what would be the result if the sheet were not sent out this year. A former sheet is still given to new members joining the church so they can be integrated into the activities of the church. Seeking to match the needs of the church and the people with their unique skills will be an on-going challenge which we all need to work on. The greatest need for volunteers is in the area of Christian Education because of the breadth of the program in the church.

Two more areas of communication the committee is discussing

  1. Recruiting a historian to help keep (a reasonable amount of) historical items for the church.
  2. Placing more articles in the local newspapers to reach more people in the community

Dianne Herrick was the chair of the Communications Committee in 2007. Emily Reel is taking over this leadership position in 2008.
